January and February found us back at one of our favourite studios, BBC Maida Vale.
Radio One’s Future Festival – a live-to–air session on 17th January, saw us providing an integrated monitor system for three performance areas in studio MV3, featuring artists Disclosure, King Krule, Palma Violets, A$AP Rocky and Mallory Knox.
The system consisted of an AVID Profile console with 96 inputs, 20 Clair 12AM wedges powered by QSC amplifiers/XTA crossovers, QSC KW122 & 181 powered cabinets, Sennheiser G3 IEMs and a full compliment of microphones / DIs to match the artists requirements. Project managed by Pepin Clout, the JHL technical team consisted of Dennie Vidal, Dan Chester, Chris Roberts and Dave Nelson.

Less than a month later BBC 6 Music called upon our services to provide further monitoring for their run of live sessions from Maida Vale running from 9th – 15th February. The opening weekend saw two monitor systems in place for sessions for the Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles shows by Alice Russell, Laura Mvula and James Hunter, consisting of two Yamaha PM5D-RH consoles and twenty JH15 wedges, once again QSC powered, along with Sennheiser G3 and Shure PSM900 IEMs and a full compliment of microphones / DIs. The artists on the following day’s Cerys Matthews and Huey Morgan shows were the Strypes and The Invisible featuring Roots Manuva. Lauren Laverne’s weekday shows saw Suede, Everything Everything, Foals, Richard Hawley and Palma Violets all live-to-air and the week was rounded out by a Cribs session on the Friday Steve Lamacq show. JHL’s man on site for the run was the unflappable Jon Shaw, ably assisted by Fran Bemrose on the opening weekend.

In the middle of these two Maida Vale capers, JHL were also to be found at the BBC Radio Theatre, providing a monitor system for the launch of the BBC’s “Alive with Music” publicity campaign, which showcased the depth and variety of the broadcaster’s musical coverage on 31st January. The presentation, hosted by the acting Director General, Tim Davie, featured acoustic performances from Dido, Jake Bugg, Labrinth and Ben Grosvenor. JHL’s technicians were Dennie Vidal and Dan Chester, using a Yamaha LS9-32 and Radian Microwedges, powered by QSC.
