NEWS FROM THE BACKLINE DEPARTMENT

Backline Department

The Backline department started 2010 supplying a plethora of TV shows: Alan Titchmarsh, Chatty Man, Loose Women, GMTV, This Morning, The Lottery, Live from Studio 5 and The 5:19 Show. In addition we have also supplied backline throughout the latest Dancing on Ice series.

JHL provided a large compliment drums and percussion for the crème de las crème of Spain’s flamenco talent during the Flamenco Festival at Sadlers Wells last month.

At the end of January, Whizz Kid Entertainment, The Sage Gateshead and Channel 4 brought us the Outside-In Festival - the first “festival” of the year. JHL supplied backline and technicians for the College and Concourse stages. Featured acts on these stages included: Pixie Lott, Scouting for Girls, Taio Cruz, N-Dubs, Erik Hassle, Alphabeat, Marina & the Diamonds and The Automatic.

Pop Star to Opera Star was a new 5 week series which took best selling recording artists to discover if they had what it takes to perform as opera divas. The pop stars were praised or criticized by four judges (Katherine Jenkins, Rolando Villazon, Meatloaf and Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen). JHL supplied music stands, conductor stands and Perspex screens for the orchestra each week and a Yamaha Baby Grand piano for any guest performances through out the duration.

Following the success of their previous trip last autumn, US rock veterans Lynyrd Skynyrd once again sourced all their backline, risers and guitar radio systems from JHL for their sell-out February run through Europe and the UK. Rumour has it that they will be back again with us before the year is out.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds rock the festivals with a little help from JHL

One of JHL’s Robert Harding’s many summer projects was to supply a complete backline, monitor system, rolling risers and FOH desk w/control for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds appearances at Glastonbury and Latitude festivals.

Ably supported by sound technicians Simon Panos & Pete Veness, backline technicians Matt Caley (Glastonbury) & Trevor Dawkins (Latitude), Robert found fine weather and never had to break out his wellingtons and sou'wester. Even more entertaining than the show itself were the crew's fellow guests at the accommodation provided for the crew at Latitude:

..and speaking of Latitude, once again JHL were contracted by Festival Republic to supply a large selection of backline and rolling risers for this year's festival, trucking a 45' Artic to site stuffed to the gills. Pepin Clout co-ordinated the project for JHL, working closely with Nick Davies from Festival Republic to ensure all his requirements for the festival were fully covered. Jamie Pentlow and his team in the JHL Backline department did a first-class job preparing the equipment for the festival in record time, especially as they had two other festivals (T4 on the Beach and Shoreditch Festival) to contend with that same weekend, never mind all the regular rentals and one-off backlines for other shows and events.

T4 on the Beach

Once again, JHL's Backline supremo Tark Bates put together an all encompassing package to cover the two stages at Weston Super Mare's annual T4 on the Beach extravaganza. Sporting the sunblock and JHL logo, Alex Barclay, Matt Caley, Steven Eagles and Nigel Reavill followed the big red truck down to the coast for a weekend of kiss-me-quick hats and pop & rock, doling out the backline to a number of top turns including:

Gossip, JLS, N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder, Taio Cruz, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Alesha Dixon, Calvin Harris, Florence & the Machine, Metro Station, Ironik ft Chipmunk, Will Young, Shontelle, Basement Jaxx, Diversity, Daniel Merriweather, Noisettes, The Saturdays and finally Dizzee Rascal.

Featuring on the 4Music Stage included: Tommy Reilly, Fightstar, Paloma Faith, The Maxxabees, Newham Generals ft Dizzee Rascal, Hockey, Little Boots and the Enemy.

JHL on Tour...

R Kelly

Jamie Pentlow and his team in the JHL Backline department set to work again at the beginning of the month with JHL supplying hit-making artist and songwriter R. Kelly with full backline and mics for his Africa tour. This was his first tour of the African continent, courtesy of his participation in the ARISE African Fashion Awards. The awards show and gala took place in Johannesburg, South Africa which also kicked off a multi-city tour that spanned South Africa, Nigeria, and London.

Few are nearer the nerve centre of the touring industry than Backline Rental Manager Tark Bates, who revels in the laws of uncertainty and improbability on which our touring industry is founded.

Take the call he took from Zebrahead, who are signed to the same management as Motorhead, on a recent Friday morning late in the month. Tark listened in astonishment as he was told that the drummer had fractured his leg (or some other body part … Tark can’t quite remember) and was told a replacement needed to be found fast. He assumed the caller was referring to a complete stand-in drummer (rather than just a prosthetic limb) and zipped into action. “We arranged full backline and a day’s rehearsal space in our studios the following day to bring the stand-in drummer up to speed,” he says. The tour was due to start 24 hours later. Result…. one happy customer and a tour that had looked in jeopardy went ahead.

The Backline dept also sent a truck load of backline to Birmingham (Carling Academy) for Dio on the 27th and London Astoria (28th), while we had to muster up a last minute backline for Lionel Richie and The Overtures to be delivered to Lake Windermere in Cumbria on the 24th for a corporate gig on the 25th (since the specified equipment could not be sourced locally or north of the border).

To get an idea of the heavy traffic experienced in Brewery Road (fortunately we operate a Congestion Charge Free Zone at JHL) here is a snapshot of the activity over 12 days in May where backline, techs, transport, rehearsals and staging were supplied.

Mary J Blige played her only UK date at the newly reconstructed Wembley Arena and had everyone on their feet from the first note of current Darkchild produced single "Enough Cryin". JHL have recently serviced a massive rental requirement for Destiny’s Child who had specified a full compliment of the new Roland FANTOM range of keyboards and modules, the specification included:

Brian Wilson takes his pets on the road!
John Henry's have just supplied all the equipment for Brian Wilson's "Pet Sounds" tour, which ran through Europe from 17th Jan to the 2nd Feb, including four nights at the Royal Festival Hall. Everything from French Horns to Finger Cymbals were supplied by the Backline Department, and by all accounts it was a show to remember. The "Pet Sounds" (credited by Sir Paul as inspiration for Sgt.Pepper!!) album was performed in it's entirety, by a fantastic band of multi-intrumentalists, all topped off with outstanding vocals. There will be more dates in the summer, so keep your eyes peeled!

JHL Backline have just taken delivery of the brand new Nord Electro 73. All the best electromechanical keyboards in the one easy to handle package. Classic electric piano's, Clav's, and the almighty tonewheel organ are all flawlessly re-recreated, with a wonderful "waterfall" keybed (as on the B3!). Dweezil's amp! It looks like a car!!
